I also love Dalene Matthee - I wish you could read her in the original Afrikaans as her use of language is absolutely gorgeous and not always entirely translatable. I must say, I struggled for a long time to enjoy South African authors. If you found Gordimer depressing then Disgrace by KM Coetzee is probably not for you!! Excellent but absolutely unrelentingly bleak. I also prefer reading stories set against the backdrop of political events rather than books with a political agenda (which, given its history, comprises a large swathe of South African literature). An autobiographical book that I enjoyed hugely for it's child's perspective on events of the time is Shirley, Goodness and Mercy by Chris Van Myk. Give it a go!Jeannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12325204219395014329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25059881.post-92436979836597122008-11-11T00:10:00.000+02:002008-11-11T00:10:00.000+02:00I've lost touch with an old friend (English) who m...I've lost touch with an old friend (English) who married a horrible girl (from SA)..I think he is living in Cape Town now, and I would love to find him again - he was such a poppet...

xAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
